Dandelion Root

Description

The root is very dark brown (almost black), on the outside, and white inside. Native to Western Europe and grows prolifically in meadows, fields and gardens.

Actions

Anti-rheumatic, bitter tonic (digestive), cholagogue, diuretic, laxative and hepatic tonic.

Globe artichoke

Description

A perennial herb that grows to 1.5m (5ft). It has a tuberous root similar to Jerusalem artichoke but the large flower-bulbs make up the edible portion of the plant. The flower resembles a large thistle with corollas of a rich blue/green colour.

Actions

bitter tonic/digestive, cholagogue, choleretic, diuretic, hepatoprotective, hepatorestorative, hepatotonic, and hypocholesterolaemic.

Descriptions

A deciduous shrub growing 2-3m in height. Clusters of yellow-orange, fragrant flowers bloom late in spring and are followed by red fruits, ovoid in shape. The leaves are green, entire, small-toothed and occur in groups.

Description

How does the liver remove toxins?

It is effectively your body’s sorting room. The blood from your stomach and intestines passes through the liver to be processed, your liver then balances the nutrients and chemicals within it for the rest of your body to use most effectively. It also creates a lovely-sounding substance called bile which helps carry away all the waste and toxic by-products.

How is the liver affected by microbes?

The liver and the intestines communicate extensively through the gut-liver axis; depressed liver function influences the gut lining and is associated with leaky gut and a healthy gut keeps the liver producing bile and glucose, and metabolising lipids which are essential for energy.

What are the warning signs of a damaged liver?

Liver disease can be an inherited condition, but there are also lots of lifestyle factors which can contribute to an unhealthy liver. Some of the warning signs of an unhealthy liver are:
