Habit and cultivation: Essentially a plant of the Northern Hemisphere, Arctic circle, Scottish Highlands and mountainous ranges up to 3,600ft. Also found in moist pastures and by streams and rivers in the Yorkshire Dales. The whole herb (above ground parts) is harvested in June and July.
Actions (known for): Astringent, demulcent (urinary), anti-haemorrhagic (systemic), anti-lithic, anti-pyretic, diuretic, febrifuge, haemostatic, menstrual cycle regulator, oestrogenic, uterine tonic.

Tannins, mainly glycosides of ellagic acid. Salicylic acid.

Indications:
Intestinal colic, diarrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, incontinence, menopause (menorrhagia), menopausal symptoms. Mouth wash for sores and ulcers and a gargle for laryngitis.
Dosage:
Liquid extract(1:2): 30-50ml per week.
