Arthrospira platensis

A photosynthesizing cyanphyte that grows dynamically in high temperatures under strong and exposed sunlight.

Family: Lichinaceae

Habit and cultivation: Can be cultivated on infertile land. Produces high yields with negligible growth requirements.

Actions (known for): Anti-oxidant, immunostimulant, hypoglycaemic, hepatoprotective, nutritional and cholesterol lowering.

History

Spanish explorers discovered that the Aztecs were gathering blue arthrospira from the local lagoons and making biscuits/ cakes to eat and sell. Now considered by WHO to be a super food. This is one of only two instances historically that humans used microbial biomass for food consumption. Partly responsible for producing the oxygen in the planet’s atmosphere.

Parts used:

Whole algae.

Constituents (bio available chemicals):

Approx 65% crude protein, C-phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and gamma linolenic acid.

Nutritional constituents:

Vitamins: A, B-complex, C, E and K. Minerals: iron, manganese, selenium, zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Indications:

Adjunct to cancer treatment, diabetes, cholesterol, malnutrition, obesity, boosts metabolism, reduces blood pressure, allergic rhinitis and heart disease.

Dosage:

Powder: 1-10g daily.
