Herbal ingredients

Chamomile

Description

Sometimes called wild chamomile; the stems are hollow and furrowed, standing up to 30cm or more. The leaves are pale green, alternate and feathery in appearance. Each upper stem is crowned with one or two flower heads. The crushed flowers (and sometimes the leaves) contain a fruity fragrance. Flowering for 1-2 months and then replaced by a 1-1.5mm long achenes seed which reseeds itself to spread.

Actions

Analgesic, anti-allergic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic (muscles), bitter digestive tonic, carminative, sedative, relaxant and vulnerary.

Echinacea purpurea

Description

A perennial herb growing to 1.8m in height. The stems are covered in short soft hairs. Leaves rising from the base of the stem are 15x10cm with coarsely, irregularly toothed margins. Flower heads are up to 15cm in diameter, with the central disc-florets orange, whilst the outer florets are red/purple with green tips. The fruit is an achene (small, thin walled, dry fruit).

Habit and cultivation: Propagated by seed or division and prefers rocky, open woodlands and prairies, although sometimes also found in wetter soils alongside rivers and streams. Flowers from January to May. Self-sows in frosty areas, may flower in the first year.

Echinacea angustifolia

Descriptions

The herb can grow up to 3ft (1m) in height. The stout stem is covered in bristly hairs, accompanied by thick, hairy leaves 3-8inches long. Once the flower head dries the pales remain, achenes are four-sided and have small teeth at each corner of the crown.

Carob

Description

An evergreen shrub or tree growing to 10m (30ft) in height. The trunk is thickly covered in rough brown bark and strong branches. The pale-green, shiny leaves only drop every second year in July. Male and female green-tinted red flowers adorn different trees. The fruit is the pod containing several seeds.

Actions

Anti-oxidant, cardio-protective, nutritive, digestive tonic, anti-cholesterolaemic, hypoglycaemic.

Liquorice

Description

A hardy perennial growing to 1.5m (4.6ft) in height. Leaves are elliptical in shape, green in colour and sticky on the underside. The clusters of blue-violet flowers are plentiful. Fruit up to 2cm long. The root system is comprised of taproots, branch rootstock and runners. Long cylindrical roots 14-20m in length and 5-20mm in diameter with a yellow coloured interior. In the fourth year of growth the roots are harvested, washed and dried.

Adaptogen, adrenal restorative, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, anti-tussive, demulcent, mild laxative, hypertensive, oestrogenic. Topically: anti-viral and acne.
