Description: An evergreen perennial growing to 0.3m (1ft) in height. Five delicate white petals, in bloom May to July, with aromatic frilled leaves. It is a self fertile hermaphrodite (has male and female organs).

Habit and cultivation: Native to South Africa with a preference for shade, living under trees in light, well drained soils.

Actions (known for): Astringent tonic, antiseptic.

History: In Indian mythology it is believed to be the first tree created in the universe (also attributed to Amalaki).

Parts used: Whole plant.

Constituents (bio available chemicals): A-pinene, myrcene, limonene, menthone, linalool, geranyl acetate, citronellol, geraniol, geranyl butyrate.

Nutritional constituents: Vitamin A, B3, E and K. Minerals: magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium.

Indications: Burns, sores, shingles, gastro-enteritis, eczema, haemorrhoids, lice, ring worm, sore throats, stress, menopausal imbalances.

Dosage: Blended into cream or lotions. Blended into massage oil or in bath. Used in vaporisers.

Cautions for therapeutic doses: Avoid during pregnancy and breast feeding.
