Description: This small to medium deciduous tree grows to 1-8m (3-26ft) in height. The leaves are simple and light-green in colour, Flowers are yellowish/green followed by its fruit of similar colour with 6 vertical stripes. The berries ripen in autumn and are harvested by hand.

Habit and cultivation: Grows in the tropical and subtropical parts of China, India, Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula.

Actions (known for): Nutritive tonic, rejuvenate, aphrodisiac, laxative, refrigerant, stomachic, astringent and homeostatic.

History: In Indian mythology it is believed to be the first tree created in the universe.

Parts used: All parts of the plant.

Constituents (bio available chemicals): Ellagitannins: emblicanin, emblicanin B, punigluconin, pedunculagin, punicafolin, phyllanemblinin A, flavonoids, kaempferol, ellagic acid and gallic acid.

Nutritional constituents: High in vitamin C.

Indications: Bleeding disorders, haemorrhoids, anemia, diabetes, gout, vertigo, gastritis, colitis, hepatitis, constipation, hepatic conditions, general debility and tissue-deficiency.

Dosage: Decoction powder: 250mg-1g daily.

Cautions for therapeutic doses: Acute diarrhoea and dysentery.
